Photo I Brut . Feeling Photography – From the Bruno Decharme Collection
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN ermöglicht erstmals in Österreich einen Einblick in über 40 künstlerische Prozesse aus mehr als 10 Nationen – basierend auf einer der größten Sammlungen der Photo Brut, die der französische Filmemacher Bruno Decharme seit über 40 Jahren zusammengetragen hat.
Was, wenn jemand über Jahrzehnte hinweg Fotografien mit kleinen Buchstaben beschriftet – nicht nur ein paar Bilder, sondern eine überwältigende Anzahl? Was, wenn sich ein Automechaniker als Kleopatra, Papst Johannes Paul II. oder als Hollywoodstar für die Kamera verkleidet – und nicht nur in diese Rollen schlüpft, sondern in hunderte, tausende? Was, wenn jemand Unmengen von Fotos sammelt, diese zerschneidet, neu zusammennäht und daraus faszinierende Gebilde schafft?

Lu Yang: The DOKU Trilogy
Lu Yangs fortlaufende Videotrilogie DOKU untersucht die Auflösung des Selbst im Verhältnis zu digitalen, biologischen und spirituellen Systemen. In den drei Teilen DOKU The Self (2022), DOKU The Flow (2024) und DOKU The Creator (2025) setzt der chinesische Künstler (*1984 in Shanghai, lebt zwischen Shanghai und Tokio) Videospielästhetik, Motion-Capture-Technologie und buddhistische Philosophie ein, um zu hinterfragen, wo Identität denn verortet sein kann, wenn das Bewusstsein dargestellt, reproduziert und endlos wiedergeboren werden kann. In der Trilogie erlebt und bewohnt ein Avatar – basierend auf dem Erscheinungsbild von Lu Yang – verschiedene Realitäten, die vom Alltäglichen bis ins völlig Fantastische reichen. Inspiriert von Konzepten des Yogācāra-Buddhismus – besonders von der Vorstellung eines ālayavijñāna („Speicherbewusstseins“) – stellt Lu Yang DOKU nicht als stabile Figur dar, sondern als flackerndes Geflecht aus Daten, Neuronen und spirituellen Konzepten. Insgesamt fragt die Trilogie, ob das Selbst, wenn es erst einmal in genetischen Code, Gehirnaktivität und algorithmisches Verhalten zerlegt worden ist, überhaupt existiert, oder ob es lediglich als unbeständige Muster fortbesteht, die sich durch biologische und digitale Netzwerke bewegen.

Photo | Brut – Feeling Photography – From the Bruno Decharme Collection
For the first time in Austria, FOTO ARSENAL WIEN presents an insight into more than 40 artistic practices from over 10 countries, based on one of the world’s largest collections of Photo Brut, assembled over more than 40 years by French filmmaker Bruno Decharme.
What happens when someone spends decades annotating photographs with tiny handwritten notes—not just a few images, but an overwhelming number of them? What happens when a car mechanic dresses up for the camera as Cleopatra, Pope John Paul II, or a Hollywood star—not merely adopting these roles once, but hundreds or even thousands of times? What happens when someone collects vast quantities of photographs, cuts them apart, stitches them back together, and transforms them into fascinating new creations?

Lu Yang: The DOKU Trilogy
Lu Yang’s ongoing video trilogy DOKU explores the dissolution of the self in relation to digital, biological, and spiritual systems. Across the three installments—DOKU The Self (2022), DOKU The Flow (2024), and DOKU The Creator (2025)—the Chinese artist (*born 1984 in Shanghai; lives between Shanghai and Tokyo) employs video game aesthetics, motion-capture technology, and Buddhist philosophy to question where identity can be situated when consciousness can be represented, reproduced, and endlessly reborn.
Throughout the trilogy, an avatar based on Lu Yang’s own appearance experiences and inhabits different realities, ranging from the everyday to the utterly fantastical. Inspired by concepts from Yogācāra Buddhism—particularly the notion of ālaya-vijñāna (“storehouse consciousness”)—Lu Yang presents DOKU not as a stable figure, but as a flickering network of data, neurons, and spiritual concepts.
Ultimately, the trilogy asks whether the self can still be said to exist once it has been broken down into genetic code, brain activity, and algorithmic behavior—or whether it persists only as a series of impermanent patterns moving through biological and digital networks.
